Location is how Watt detects where your day actually happened β the gym, the office, home β so activities get logged without you entering them. It's what lets your Lifelog fill itself in between calendar events.
Grant location access
- Open Watt and go to Senses (Devices and Integrations).
- Under LOCATION, tap Enable Location.
- When your phone asks, choose the Always option.
Why Watt asks for "Always"
This is the part worth understanding, because the two permission levels behave very differently:
- Always β Watt detects places throughout the day, including when the app is closed. This is what automatic tracking needs.
- While Using the App β Watt can only detect places while the app is open on screen. You'll see this as Partial access in Senses, and most of your day won't be logged.
On iPhone, iOS often grants "While Using" first and only offers "Always" later, either in a follow-up prompt after a few days or in Settings. If Senses shows Partial access, that's what happened.
Upgrading on iPhone
- Go to iOS Settings β Privacy & Security β Location Services β Watt.
- Choose Always.
- Turn on Precise Location.
Upgrading on Android
- Go to Settings β Apps β Watt β Permissions β Location.
- Choose Allow all the time.
- Turn on Use precise location.
You can also tap Open Settings directly from the LOCATION card in Senses.
What the status means

How your location data is handled
Your saved places stay on your account so Watt can recognise them and detect your activities automatically. Watt does not sell location data and does not use it for advertising. Precise coordinates from past visits are purged over time.
You can review, rename and delete saved places at any time in Senses β LOCATION.
If places aren't being detected
- Check the status in Senses first. "Partial access" is the usual culprit β follow the upgrade steps above.
- Turn on Precise Location. Without it, your phone reports an approximate area that's too coarse to tell one place from another.
- Turn off Low Power / Battery Saver mode. Both restrict background location on iOS and Android.
- Check battery optimisation on Android. Settings β Apps β Watt β Battery β set to Unrestricted, so the system doesn't shut down background detection.
- Give it a day. Watt learns your regular places over repeat visits; a location visited once may not be recognised yet.
